Seventh Generation: Diva Review

Regular readers already know I’m a big fan of making my own cleaning supplies. You just can’t beat the price!
I know that MANY of you are not ready to start mixing your own cleaners – clearly your sanity is still intact. That said – You do want to know the best options for non toxic cleaning in your own home.
When it comes to green home cleaning products you can’t get too far into any discussion without talking about Seventh Generation, a leader in the non toxic, greener household solutions industry.
What they have to say:
Seventh Generation is committed to being the most trusted brand of household and personal-care products for your living home. Our products are healthy and safe for the air, the surfaces, the fabrics, the pets, and the people within your home — and for the community and environment outside of it. Seventh Generation also offers products for baby that are safe for your children and the planet.
Seventh Generation is their committed to inspiring change – their product labels are clear and you can understand what you are reading. Their products will often include a statement about the eco impact of your purchasing decision. Statistics that have inspired me.
For Example
If every family replaced just one roll of virgin fiber 120 count Paper Towels with 100% recycled paper towels we would save 1 million trees!
If every family replace just one bottle of conventional liquid laundry detergent with a plant derived alternative we would save 466,000 Barrels of Oil!
Seventh Generation sent me their Free & Clear Home Started Kit to try out.
The kit includes:
Free & Clear Natural Glass & Surface Cleaner
Free & Clear Natural All Purpose Cleaner
Free & Clear Natural Dish Liquid
Free & Clear Natural Laundry Detergent, 32 oz
Free & Clear Fabric Softener, 50 oz
Natural Paper Towels (-1) 120 Count
Reusable Tote
If you haven’t ventured into non toxic, eco friendly cleaning & household products, this is a great company to try. As a leader in the “green household solutions’ market I’m proud to share their products with my readers. Seventh Generation is aware of the fact that if their products don’t do the job – people won’t use them! So the product effectiveness is imperative to them.
As a company they have a goal of being as transparent as they can with consumers. They share both their victories and where they fall short of their goals on their website. Repeatedly their products lead the way for being some of the best choices from both an toxin standpoint and their environmental impact in the industry. Green is more than a marketing ploy, it is part of their corporate vision.
As a mother – one of the most compelling things I read on their entire site wasn’t statistic or figures, rather this story that was shared in their corporate consciousness report:
Dear Seventh Generation:
My heart has been overflowing with gratitude since Saturday night. I was emptying the
dishwasher, and hadn’t realized that it had malfunctioned (all of the dishwashing powder
was still in there). My daughter had opened the little detergent door when I wasn’t paying
attention. I looked down to see her with two handfuls and a mouthful of your dishwasher
powder. Frantic, I called Poison Control. “My daughter ate dishwasher powder.” They asked
what brand it was. “Seventh Generation.” “Oh, it’s fine then. Just wash it off her hands, and
give her a glass of water.” Thank you, thank you, thank you! — Gabrielle
From my perspective this letter illustrates so much of what motivates me to make better choices for my family and care more about the environment for the future. It’s about our children and their future.
Seventh Generation has a great website full of information & coupons. So don’t forget to take advantage and save a few dollars – it all adds up!

Tips for Greener Living

1. Before You Buy – Use What You Have.
Chances are you have a lot of stuff in your closets waiting to be used! I’ve recently broken a habit of buying bulk. One of my challenges has been to use what I have before moving on to greener and better options. Don’t we just get excited and want to go shopping!
Dig around. You’ll be surprised at what you have – using what you have is better than a green acquisition. In the PND pantry we still have 3 boxes of plastic Costco cutlery, 1200 paper napkins, ribbon, gift wrap, moisturizers, conditioners, sunscreens… you get the idea. We’re working on it!
2. Take Care of The Things You Own!
Taking care of your “stuff” values the resources that went into making it! You’ll keep them longer and reducing impact by not having to replace it. Your home, cars, clothing, shoes, toys, etc… will all benefit from being well taken care of. And the environment will thank you, if it’s taken care of it’s less likely to be tossed when you are done with it. It’s more likely that you’ll be able to pass it along to a new home when you’re done with it.
Teaching your children to care for their things will impart values that will last a lifetime.
3. Pick just one area of your life to green!
Wherever you are in your green journey… whether you are just beginning or an ecosavant, pick ONE new area to work on. Once mastered you can add another, another, another… you get the idea. Living a greener, healthier life is a journey that starts with one step.
4. Buy Organic
Start buying organic in a new area of you life.
You may have bought organic food, or this might be new for you. You may buy organic dairy, but haven’t moved into the produce section yet. Pick a new area to explore the benefits of organic.
If you’ve never bought organic cotton or denim, next time you’re shopping keep your eyes and mind open. Ask the stores you shop at. Even if you make a conventional selection, asking the questions will help spread the word that customers care and want to see more options. You may even find organic options in places you don’t expect. This last holiday season I was able to buy organic cotton casual clothing for lil’ Diva at Walmart and Organic PJ’s for both the kids at Costco.
Keep your eyes peeled and ASK!
5. Buy Fair Trade
I buy fair trade chocolate. I figure chocolate is something I don’t NEED. It’s a luxury. I figure, if it’s a luxury I can step up and make sure children aren’t picking the cocoa beans for my chocolate. It’s been fun, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect fair trade organic fix to my chocolate cravings.
It doesn’t have to be chocolate, you could pick coffee, clothing, bananas, again… sometimes starting in an area of your life that is already a splurge will make it a little easier to spend that little bit extra that fair trade calls for.
You’ll be surprised how it will inspire you!
6. Buy Quality
Can’t find what you are looking for organic or fair trade, buy good quality. It will last and when you’re done you’ll be able to pass it on. As a country we have become accustomed to buying everything in quantity. We can take a page out of the Europeans’ book, attempt to retrain our sense of value. Buy fewer high quality items, moving away from our culture’s more, more, more frame of mind. Look for items that are made in your country too, supporting your own economy.
5. When You’re Done with Something – Pass It On!
When you are done with something, find a new home for it! We had a rug that our dogs had scratched. I listed it on Craigslist with pictures of the damage, within 30 minutes I had 10 people that wanted it. When we we’re renovating I listed mirrors, sinks, hardware… whatever I thought someone else might find useful…. and they came. These items were destined for the landfill, but with not too much effort were taken away and used by others.
That said – this is one of my areas of weakness. I have a hard time saying goodbye to my stuff. I’m sure it comes from growing up really poor!
6. Reusable Water Bottles
If you don’t have a reusable water bottle and a way to filter your water. Get one and start using it!
Get in the habit of taking your bottles and the children’s bottles ALL THE TIME. In particular parties, sporting events and school. Eventually if host/ess’ start seeing guests arriving equipped with their own beverage containers they won’t feel the need to buy bottled water for their parties. We put out iced tea, water with glasses.
7. Group you errands into similar geographic regions.
Saves trips, saves gas, saves time! SCORE!
8. Detox Your Beauty!
When I first began the journey to detox my beauty routine, I started by using up what I had (still doing this of a few things!) and replacing them with safer options! I encourage everyone to do this. The next item you are running low on, replace it with something better. Use PND to help find the replacement that is right for you. Knowing what I know now, if I was pregnant, I wouldn’t use the “use it up” method. I would make the switch immediately.
Do this for your children first if you have them! Their developing systems are more vulnerable to the toxins in their environment.
9. Pay attention to Preservatives and Additives.
While you are shopping, get in the habit of reading labels! If you can’t read the name of the ingredient, chances are you’d be better off with a different option. You’ll be surprised – pick up pickle relish and 2 brands will contain HFCS, one will not… easy healthier switch.
10. Use Less Canned Foods.
Chances are you’ve heard about BPA’s in the news, in particular concern over plastics and baby bottles. But did you know how we ingest the most BPA’s – Canned Food. Opt for glass packaging over canned to minimize your families exposure!
11. Green Your Parties!
Parties can be a huge source of waste. We opt for convenience, buy a lot of pre packaged, convenient entertainment foods. We serve foods on paper or plastic plates, drink from countless paper & plastic cups. Start adding up the cost of all that convenience and not only are you throwing a lot of hard earned money in the landfill, but that plastic will live there forever.
One year we were getting ready for a super bowl party and did the math. For the cost of buying paper goods, we were able to purchase inexpensive white plates, glasses and wine glasses from IKEA. We use these for our parties - including the parties for the little ones. It may take a little extra effort, but I never have to run out to the store for cups and plates last minute! Next on the list is to get party flatware.
You can also find reasonably priced “catering” sets at Pottery Barn, Cost Plus, and Bed Bath & Beyond.
The pre-packaged food options. Sometimes it’s easy to succumb to the ease of this ready to go food, but for so much less money you can buy really nice, high quality foods, fruits and vegetables.
You might even find with all the money you’re saving on prepared foods and paper goods that you can spend your savings on getting an extra set of hands to help you at the party!
If you can’t bear the thought of these suggestions buy eco friendly disposables. You can find them at Smart & Final, Whole Foods and such. You are looking for plastics that can be Compostable. This typically means they will biodegrade in a few weeks. Compostable plastics can be placed in our “green” garbage bins in Los Angeles. With a little research you can find out if you can compost with your yard waste in your area (in the event you don’t have one in your yard)!
12. Clean Green
Start cleaning your home with green cleaners or make your own formulas using some of our easy recipes. You’ll reduce the toxins you are breathing in your home after you’ve cleaned it.
I’ll never forget an Oprah “ah ha” moment for me… “CLEAN DOESN’T HAVE A SMELL“!
Extra Credit: Use less plastic!
Bring your own bags to the grocery store. Choose products with less plastic packaging. Choose items packaged in glass. Store your leftovers in glass.
You Can Do It!
I know, I know… I missed so many things… you can do those things too!
I hope these tips inspire you to find new things you can do to have a healthier, happier, greener life!
SHARE WHAT YOU PLAN TO GREEN IN YOUR LIFE!
Is Going Green Making Your Spouse See Red?
How is your marriage/relationship handling your green conversion?
Short of two eco minded meeting and marrying. It seems that many households have one spouse who starts to become greener or healthier and drags the other along for the ride.
Dude happily embraced my last vehicle, the hybrid Lexus RH400 – which I loved but no longer worked for us during the double stroller, double car seat days which are fast drawing to a close (is that possible!). Enter the mini-van. Convincing Dude that vinegar is an effective germ killing substitute for Lysol is a tougher sell. Getting him to carry his own bottle of water, not happening (yet). When he came home with a gallon of Pantene Pro V, I almost returned it – stopping myself – thinking it would be best interest of our marriage.
I could go on… and on… and on… sharing my personal favorite; my husband calling me by my mother’s first name! What is even more frustrating is that he does this without getting informed and I write a blog on the subject matter!
The question becomes how to balance a commitment to living greener or healthier without running off your mate. They did take you for better or worse, but may not have bargained for flax meal and fair trade.
What impact does making green changes have on a marriage?
Sometimes the greener spouse gets excited about a new idea, we run around with a sledge hammer making changes, meanwhile others in our family were quite content with the old way of doing business.
Even worse, we’re right. We feel extremely justified in our position! How can there be an argument? While we may be “right”, nothing will kill a marriage faster than taking that position! A marriage has it’s own set of rules, negotiated over time by each couple. Steamroll your spouse one too many times and you might find they tune you out completely. Needless to say this does not make for a happy union.
- What compromises are you making to keep your spouse on the greenwagon? Are they moving along with you or resisting and backtracking?
- How are you coping with their reaction?
- How are you modifying your green/detoxing/healthy feeding efforts to accommodate you mate?
- What solutions have you found that work for your entire family?
- What have you found you can’t get cooperation on, no matter how hard you try?

Sprig Toys Dolphin Explorer Boat: Review
December 23, 2009 by Tania
Founded in 2007 by an award winning trio of toy veterans Sprig Toys set out to create toys that would inspire children’s imaginations, be responsibly manufactured and green. A tall order in the toy industry.
In a few short years they have made their mark. Winning prestigious awards like, Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009, Creative Toy Award from Creative Child Magazine, Dr. Toy’s 100 best toy products of 2008 and others. This company has had a busy few years!
Sprig toys are made from Sprigwood™ a proprietary bio-composite of recycled wood and reclaimed plastic. So it looks almost like a plastic toy, but not quite. They use Sprigwood™ to make an assortment of eco friedly toys that they have broken into Series:
Sprigwood is dishwasher safe on the top shelf, so their non electronic toys can get squeaky clean with a little help from one of my favorite kitchen appliances.
Eco-Trucks – Excavators, Dump Trucks, and loaders oh my. Playing in the sand and dirt is good clean fun with our affordable trucks.
Sprig Hallow - Join Bee & Butterfly and other characters on adventures in the sand, garden, or pool. Includes playsets, vehicles, and outdoor tools all in one!
Story Builders – allow children to build and tell their own stories. They are a complete building playset and classic storybook rolled together.
The Adventure Series – a world full of vehicles, characters, and animals to stimulate fun filled expeditions on both land and water.
They recently sent Little Diva and Dude The Dolphin Explorer Boat from their adventure series.
The set consists of:
2 boats – Explorer Boat (largest item in the set) and smaller Rescue Boat
1 Life Preserver
2 Dolphins – Mother and Baby
1 Adventure Guide – Captain Owen
1 Adventure Hat – Interchangeable!
1 Backpack Accessory
Little Diva exclaimed on seeing photos of the Dolphin Explorer set “dolphins are my most favorite ocean animal ever!!!” Picture the hands clasped over her chest. She was so excited when the actual package arrived.
When I opened the package for a sneak preview I was surprised to find the dolphin’s bottoms were hollowed out. But after observing it in action I can see how this helps them float. This also solves another common problem with toys that get water time… Mildew. We have had so many toys end up thrown out because they had been taken over by mildew. The open bottom of the dolphins enables for thorough cleaning.
The boat and dolphins float and their simple design allow your child’s imagination to dictate how they play with the set.
One Lucky Reader will win a Dolphin Explorer Boat, but if you just can’t wait find it on Amazon:

Green Toys featured on Smart Planet

PND recently posted a review and giveaway for Green Toys.
Take a few minutes to watch this clip and learn more about how Green Toys are made. So cool to see great things from an American company!
Green Toys: Diva Review
December 8, 2009 by Tania
Filed under Gift Guide, Giveaways, Holidays, Reviews
By Tania Reuben
Green Toys makes a line of toys made in the USA from recycled milk jugs! Very few toys are Made in the USA and even fewer are made from primarily reclaimed ingredients!
Most PND readers know that I’m not a big fan of plastic. Green Toys are part of the solution. They use recycled plastic milk jugs, turning waste into fun, high quality, safe toys. The milk jugs are high-density polyethylene (or HDPE), the safest plastic option in the marketplace today.
Green Toys has some great basics in their line-up. Everything from jump ropes & eco saucer (think frisbee) to a 15 piece tool set, 4 piece Sand Set and a 27 piece Cookware & Dining Set.
Green Toys recently sent me a couple of their toys to check out:
The Tea Set – 17 pieces of food safe tea fun!
Their Tea Set is great, and I’m not the only one who think so. At the time of writing this post this set had 78 reviews on Amazon and a 5 star rating!
The set is sturdy, the colors are pale pastel and the size of the cups and plates are just right. Not too big, not too small.
One of the best things about this set is that it IS food safe. Now this might seem like a basic criteria for a children’s tea set, but surprisingly it’s not. Most of the tea sets in the marketplace for children are not food safe. Yet I bet everyone of them is used to hold many a thimbleful of water that that will be refilled and consumed throughout every tea party.
Recycle Truck – Boys (and girls) loves trucks and choosing a recycling truck gives another tool for eco teaching the child in your life
The Truck is a good size, similar to those you’ll see in a sandbox or playground. It has a door that opens on the back so it can be filled with treasures – important in the Diva home. We also liked that the side of the truck had small openings that the children use to stash coins or rocks.
It’s worth noting that the doors to the cabin of the truck don’t open and close and which is fine with me, one less thing to break off and fall apart.
A Special Not About Packaging! Have you ever had to spend more time wresting to get your toys out of their excessive packaging? You won’t have that experience with green toys. They don’t use any cellophane, plastic, or twist ties! They also use all 100% recyclable corrugated cardboard to package their toys. Open the box and play! Just like it should be!
We loved the Green Toys so much that I added a few of their items to the children’s wishlist for their grandparents! I added the cookware set and the tool box.

Urth Handbags: Product Review
By Tania Reuben
Looking for the ultimate eco accessory? Look no further than UrthBags.
This is a company that creates something from nothing (or most peoples trash). They actually have an entire line made out of recycled juice boxes and old magazines! Additionally they use biodegradable materials for some styles.
Urth also works with Fair Trade organizations to manufacture their bags. Their mission is to promote a hip, earth-friendly lifestyle and provide opportunities to those who are less fortunate. Their goal is to inspire more people to recycle, reuse & become more Eco-minded in our overly ‘disposable’ world.
They recently sent me one of their “juice box” handbags to try. So far not one toddler has asked for a drink from my purse.
They sent over the “Monica” which I knew I would love for evening wear because of the matte silver color. I was really surprised at how good the bag looked.
I left some lovely designer bags at home to take the “Monica” out to a fancy Hollywood fundraiser! I kept hoping someone would pay it a compliment so I could brag that it was made of juice boxes! I’m taking it out a few times this holiday season so cross your fingers!
Take a minute to look through all the great styles they offer and next time you want to add a handbag to your collection, consider helping the earth by selecting an Urth Handbag.
CONGRATULATIONS TO: Laurie – Check your inbox!

Sub Urban Riot T-Shirts: Review
By Tania Reuben
Sub Urban Riot has created a line of hip and approachable organic clothing. The foundation of their line is T-Shirts. Shirts that have been seen on Entourage’s Adrien Grenier and Sunny in Philadelphia.
The clothes at RIOT have cool screened graphics that carry hip, retro and eco messages. They are ultra soft organic cotton and made in the USA.
Riot recently sent me the Windstorm T-Shirt to check out. The fit was very slim, too slim for Dude, it is marked as their slim fit and slim it is. The good folks at RIOT warned me! If you’ve been working out and want to show it off, this is the t-shirt to do it in
I loved how soft the cotton was and how cool the design was in person. It was the graphic design on this tee that first attracted me to Riot.
Prefer an “American Fit” t-shirt? Don’t fret, they have you covered. Check out; Charlie’s Famous Horse Tee, RIOT, Sunny Tee: Hell Yeah, Majestic Panther
RIOT has t-shirts, hoodies, and henleys for men and women. They offer 4 t-shirts for children and a few really cool t-shirt dresses for ladies.
Cross the Eco Hip off you holiday list this year with some cool duds from Sub Urban Riot.

Fabulous Sweaters for Fall & Winter: Eco Savvy Guide
November 25, 2009 by Tania
Filed under Fashion, Gift Guide, Holidays
By Tania Reuben
With winter moving through most of the country there is nothing like a great sweater.
Living in Los Angeles it doesn’t get too cold, I probably wear sweaters daily. We are cold in the morning (if you call 48 degrees cold and I do) and often in a t-shirt by midday – cardigans offer warmth with flexibility. Dodging to avoid the snowballs being flung my way by mid-west and east coast readers.
Recently I’ve been on a hunt to find great eco sweaters. I thought if I was looking, maybe my readers were too. It didn’t hurt that as an added bonus I’d be able to feature some fabulous woolens from my sponsor, hessnatur. I searched through pages on Google, hunting and found nothing I loved. The sweaters from my sponsor, were better than anything I was finding.
My plan had been to feature one or two styles from hessnatur. After my search, I couldn’t find anything I wanted to add. I did make an honest attempt. From the style of their offerings, the ethical manufacturing, the number of organic selections, to their pricing. They have some of the best eco friendly sweaters I could find. Did I mention the variety of styles they offer? They hands down had more styles, color and variety than any site I visited preparing this piece.
Sweaters make a great gift because they tend to be more forgiving fit wise, but if it’s not right, it’s nice to know that you don’t have to pay more money to return an item. hessnatur is currently offers free shipping and returns, for worry free online shopping.
