Coloring Easter Eggs

Coloring Easter Eggs Naturally: Create a New Easter Tradion

I heard about Coloring Easter Eggs naturally years ago, but the rumors scared me away.  I should have known better than to believe everything I hear, but reading things like, “If you dye your eggs with chopped beets, your eggs will taste like beets,” is clearly not a motivator.  Beet flavored eggs?

Then a few years later I saw natural dying instructions from Martha Stewart (who would never eat eggs tasting of beets, I reasoned).   I decided to give it a try.  I have dyed eggs naturally ever since and even experimented with different color “recipes” for the best look.  It is really quite easy and you don’t even need a food processor for chopping.

In fact, coloring eggs naturally isn’t much harder than using commercial dyes and the whole family can get involved.  Below you will find the the basic instructions and variations for coloring Easter Eggs Pink, Blue, Yellow, and every combination those colors combine to make..

Instructions for Coloring Easter Eggs

Coloring Easter Eggs Pink

  • Slice one beet and discard the ends
  • Place the slices in a small saucepan and cover shallowly with water.
  • Bring the water to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Let cool then strain liquid into a coffee cup.
  • Add 1 T of vinegar.
  • Place a hard cooked egg into the dye and let it sit until colored.

Coloring Easter Eggs Blue

Blue dye can be made the same way except you use a small to medium red cabbage instead of a beet. Quarter the cabbage, discard the core, cover with water and boil for 30 minutes, then strain.

Coloring Easter Eggs Yellow

Yellow can be made by boiling a teaspoon of turmeric for a few minutes then straining through a paper towel.

Addition Color Options

Once you have pink, yellow and blue, you can make any color you want.  Simply color an egg then re-dip it in a second color to make a new one.  A yellow egg placed briefly in blue will turn green.  Add a pink egg to blue dye to turn it purple, and so on.

Note: With this natural process, some variation is normal.  This year everything worked perfectly but one year my pink beet dye turned our eggs brown.  We had fun anyway!

No matter what, my eggs have always tasted great.  And it feels good to have a green Easter–in more ways than one!

Axe Body Spray Allergic Reaction: Not an Isolated Incident

Axe Body Spray Allergic Reaction:

Not the Isolated Incident You Might Think

This video discusses the  Axe Body Spray Allergic Reaction that is ALL over the news right now.

A high school in Pensylvania has asked students to stop wearing Axe Body spray, cologne and perfumes after an allergic reaction hospitalized one student.

While might sound unusual and extreme it’s actually far more common than you might expect – According to American Lung Association 30-40% of people experience some form of allergic reaction to fragrances.  These symptoms range from sneezing and headaches to the more severe reaction we are hearing about out of  Pennsylvania.

As sad as this story is, it’s important for us to use cases like this to remind people that one little spritz of seemingly innocent perfume may not necessarily as safe as we think.

What many people don’t know about conventional fragrances is that they are primarily made with synthetic ingredients.

  • over 90% contain synthetic musks that are known neurotoxins and were banned in Japan in the 1980′s  (I’m not sure why we still allow them in this country).
  • over 90% contain diethyl phthalates – which while are reportedly safe – are a known environmental hazard.
  • these statistics don’t even address the safety of the synthesized ingredients that make up the body of the perfume.

So I know what you’re thinking… that’s all well and good, but I still want to smell good? The good news is there are botanical alternatives to synthetic fragrances.  Pure Natural Diva has recently introduced a line of 100% natural and synthetic free Botanical Perfumes.

Most Fuel Efficient Family Vehicles of 2013

Most Fuel Efficient Green Family Vehicles in 2013

As hybrid and electric automotive technologies improve in efficiency and decrease in cost, families across the country are considering a green vehicle for the first time. Traditional, gasoline-only vehicles have also come a long way, staying closely competitive with hybrid technologyís fuel efficiency. And with so many options, it can be difficult to know which vehicle is best for your household.
Here are the most fuel efficient vehicle models in a few vehicle classes to help you during your search. You might be surprised by how many traditional vehicles beat out hybrids to make the cut.

Sedans
The classic sedan is a roomy four-door vehicle that is perfect for most small to mid-sized families. Here are the three most fuel efficient sedans according to shopautoweek.com:

  1. Ford Fusion Hybrid ñ This hybrid electric combines a 2.0-liter, four cylinder engine with a lithium-ion battery back and electric motor to get 47 miles per gallon (mpg) combined city and highway travel.
  2. Volkswagen Passat TDI ñ The engineers at Volkswagen have taken the diesel engine into the 21st century. This diesel sedan gets 31 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway, for a combined 35 mpg.
  3. Nissan Altima ñ The four-cylinder Nissan Altima uses a 2.5-liter engine and continuously variable automatic transmission to achieve a combined 31 mpg.

Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs)

While most SUVs are notorious gas guzzlers, these three vehicles manage to combine size, power and efficiency. Here are the three most efficient SUVs according to thesupercars.com:

  1. Ford Escape Hybrid ñ This vehicle uses a 2.5-liter, 177 horsepower engine to achieve an average fuel efficiency of 32 mpg. All while being able to reach 60 mph in less than 10 seconds.
  2. Lexus RX 450h ñ The Lexus SUV hybrid has a slightly larger engine than the Ford, a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower, but still manages to achieve an average combined efficiency of 30 mpg.
  3. Mazda CX-5 ñ Classified as a ìcompact crossover SUV,î the CX-5 also gets 30 mpg.

Minivans
If you need more space than sedans and SUVs offer, consider a fuel efficient minivan. These vehicles can comfortably handle seven passengers, and seats can be arranged or removed to accommodate cargo. Here are the top three most fuel efficient minivans of 2013, according to shopautoweek.com:

  1. Honda Odyssey (automatic transmission) ñ The six-speed automatic transmission helps this van achieve 22 combined mpg. Not bad for a vehicle designed to transport seven adults.
  2. Nissan Quest ñ Coming in just under the Odyssey is the Quest, which gets a respectable 21 mpg.
  3. Honda Odyssey (manual transmission) ñ Tied for second with a combined 21 mpg rating, this version of the Odyssey takes a slight fuel efficiency hit due to the five-speed manual transmission.

Green family vehicles like electric and hybrids can help reduce the amount of money you spend on fuel each month, but they’re not the only way to curb your auto budget. Get  auto insurance quotes online  from a few auto insurance companies and choose the provider that offers the best price and coverage for your green family vehicle.

Amana Washer & Dryer Review & Giveaway

Amana Washer & Dryer Review

Amana recently reached out to Pure Natural Diva and asked if we wanted to host an Amana Washer & Dryer review and giveaway!  Of course we said yes, and they sent the Amana Washer (NTW 4750 YQ) and Amana Dryer (NED 4700 YQ) to check out!

I was so excited because for years I’ve had a dream of stealing space from our overly large garage to create a bonafide laundry room in our home.  The Amana washer and dryer set  is the first step towards making that dream real…

In our currently laundry area – more of a a hallway than a laundry room – we have a compact Miele Novatronic front load washer and an electric dryer.  Miele manufactures a super efficient and reliable laundry system, but buying this set today will set you back around $3500.  Not exactly approachable for everyone’s budget.  The Amana set prices in at a reasonable $1130 and for a top loader is surprisingly energy efficient.

The Amana Washer

A closer look at the Amana Washer reveals that it is Energy Star qualified.  Comparing this unit to most pre 2004 models and you’ll use 84% less energy and 73% less water doing your laundry – over 11 years that represents around $2000 in savings.  This unit will do a load of wash using as little as 13 gallons of water and for durability the washer features a stainless steel  wash basket.

The Amana Dryer

According to the Consumer Energy Center you’ll want to consider 3 things when looking for an energy efficient dryer:

  • Check for the highest energy factor number when comparing different models. Remember that there are two costs to an appliance – the initial purchase price, and the cost of operating that appliance over the many years you own it.
  • Know whether your laundry room has gas or electricity hookups. If you need to add a gas line and a vent to operate a gas dryer, you may spend more on adding the hookup than you’ll save with the cheaper operating cost of gas.
  •  Look for a clothes dryer with a moisture sensor that automatically shuts off the machine when your clothes are dry. Not only does this save energy; it reduces wear and tear on clothes caused by over-drying.

It’s estimated that operating costs for a gas dryer are about 50% less than an electric dryer, with this in mind we opted for a Gas Dryer.  The Amana also come with a key energy efficient feature – a moisture sensor.  This feature turns the dryer off once it detects the clothing is dry.  Not only is this good for efficiency – it’s also key in protecting fabrics, preventing shrinkage, and extending the life of your clothing.

Closing Thoughts:

If you are after more bells and whistles – this might not be the right set for you, but expect to pay more… a lot more.  What I like about this set is that at this price point the Amana offers a number of key features for function and energy efficiency.  It’s streamlined options have the features you need… without extras that just add to the price tag, but not the function.

I’m so excited that Pure Natural Diva is part of the giveaway that will find a new home for an Amana Washer and Dryer!  Happy New Year!!!  The contest runs from January 2, 2013 to January 16, 2013 @11:59 MST.  Check out the following link for all the details.  The contest is being run by Today’s Mama via Rafflecopter!

Love letter to the FTC – Pure Natural Diva was sent the above units for the purpose of this review.  We were also paid an administration fee for hosting this giveaway.  As always our opinions remain our own and are not for sale.

Lead, Nickel and other Toxins in Face Paints!

Too Close to the Eye!

Face Painting epitomizes childhood joy. Their smiles are big as they dive into the fantasy land that face painting evokes.

The question is – should we be concerned about potential toxins contained in these often cheaply made, deeply pigmented face paint products? In this video we cover toxins the EWG has found in the face paint they tested… along with other known allergens. Lyra  Face Painting Pencils

made in Germany is a good option.

Here Comes The Boom – A Feel Good Movie

Here Comes The Boom – A Feel Good Family Movie

This Friday Dude’s (my husband) latest movie – Here Comes The Boom will be released nationwide. The movie stars Kevin James, Salma Hayek, Henry Winkler, Charice, Bas Rutten, a number of MMA superstars, and East Coast (my stepson) makes his big screen debut – look for him lugging the base in the opening sequence of the movie!

Donning my reviewers hat…

Critics are describing the movie as School Of Rock meets Rocky and I think if you liked those movies, you’ll love Here Comes the Boom. I loved the movie, but I recognize my objectivity might be a bit clouded.

Kevin James plays disenchanted school teacher – Scott Voss – who rediscovers his passion for teaching and life when he unwittingly volunteers to save his school’s music program, by becoming a losing MMA fighter.

The break out star of Boom is Voss’ coach for this adventure – Bas Rutten. This mixed martial arts legend knocks it out of the park, playing a former MMA athlete who missed his shot at UFC greatness and is now coaching at a gym. I don’t want to give anything away here… but he checked his image at the door and comitted to this role, his comedic timing is impeccable, and I predict we’ll be seeing more of him in the future.

The movie soundtrack was another highlight of the movie – I’ve had the NSFW Remix of Neil Diamond’s song Holly Holy firmly lodged in my mind since screening the film – in a good way. Fan’s of Charice won’t be disappointed as she does a great job playing one of Mr. Voss’ students, and has a chance to show off her amazing vocal talent.

Is Here Comes The Boom A family Movie?

Here Comes The Boom is rated PG, and I think that this is a great movie for families with tweens. The message of determination and pursuing your passion is the perfect take away for a feel good family movie.

If your children are younger, and involved in martial arts and contact sports like football and boxing – this is  likely an indicator this movie will be a good fit.

The language is clean, their are no sex scenes, there is not gratuitous violence… aside from the fight training and fight scenes, it’s clean.

I’ve been watching MMA for years and I thought the fight scenes were a highlight of the movie, the contact looks very legit – which again, the tweens will love and some younger children will find to intense. As a parent – you know your children best.

If you decide to go with your kids and you’ll find yourself at a movie you’ll enjoy right along with them.

A Sneak Peak from the Red Carpet of the Here Comes the Boom Premiere

I was lucky to be in New York for the premiere of Here Comes the Boom… and took a ton of pictures to share a bit of the red carpet experience with you!

Salma Hayek walks the crowded red carpet.

Bas Rutten steels the show with impeccable comedic timing.

Salma Hayek stops for a quick photo before we watch the premiere.

Go check it out this weekend, and let me know your thoughts! Here Comes The Boom – did it bring it?
