Jenulence Green Tea Sun Cream
grteacream

Jenulence is a small family run business based in Staten Island, New York founded in 2003. Their corporate motto is: If you can’t eat it, don’t use it on your skin. Nice motto.

They recently sent me a sample of their Green Tea Sun Cream.

The Green Tea Sun cream is a rich day cream packed with antioxidants.  On their website I learned about the  documented cancer fighting properties of  a topically applied mixture of antioxidants, especially when combined with green tea.

The Twinkie Report: 12 Preservatives to Avoid

By Tania Reuben

PND recently found an article on MSN Health and Fitness 12 Preservative to Avoid, it seemed worth sharing.  The article briefly lists MSN Healths picks for the top 12 additives and preservatives to avoid and briefly explains why.  This list has inspired PND to create a new series.

We’re calling it ~ The Twinkie Report.

The 12 preservatives to avoid:

  • Sodium Nitrate
  • Propyl Gallateu usually used in conjunction with BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydrozyttoluene)
  • Propyl gallate
  • MSG – Monosodium glutamate – AKA Natural Flavorings
  • Trans fats
  • Aspartame
  • Acesulfame-K – Another Sweetener
  • Food colorings: Blue 1, 2; Red 3; Green 3; and Yellow 6
  • Olestra
  • Potassium bromate
  • White sugar
  • Sodium chloride
  • Over the next few weeks PND plans on going through each preservative on the list to learn even more about why we should be avoiding them.

Mr Twinkie image courtesy of Jeffery C. Johnson (Chicago)

Mr Twinkie image courtesy of Jeffery C. Johnson (Chicago)

    Some questions we’ll ask:

    What is it?
    Why Should we avoid it?
    Where is it used/Which Foods?
    What can we do/use instead?

We’re not sure exactly why we’re picking on the Twinkie, except when thinking about the ultimate in non food, preservative laden food ~ The Twinkie comes to mind first!

Then we found this picture, which keeps making us laugh.  On side note I don’t think we’ll be doing any hostess giveaways in the near future.  Apologies to our readers.

What exactly is in the Twinkie – not much that can be considered real food from our research.

Digging a little deeper the top ingredients are:

    1. Enriched Wheat Flour – enriched with ferrous sulphate (iron), B vitamins (niacin, thiamine mononitrate [B1],ribofavin [B12] and folic acid).
    2. Sugar
    3. Corn syrup
    4. Water
    5. High fructose corn syrup
    6. Vegetable and/or animal shortening – containing one or more of partially hydrogenated soybean, cottonseed or canola oil, and beef fat.
    7. Dextrose
    8. Whole eggs

According to Steve Ettlinger’s book, Twinkie Deconstructed, five ingredients come from rocks and other ingredients like cellulose gum, Polysorbate 60, and calcium sulfate… These ingredients are also used in sheet rock, shampoo, and rocket fuel.

We’re looking forward to learning more and sharing with you over the coming weeks.

    First up ~ Sodium Nitrate.

Rocket Fuel in Drinking Water MAY Be Regulated – If We Are Lucky!

September 22, 2009 by Tania Reuben

    By  Tania Reuben

I’m saddened to live in a Country where we need to have a DEBATE about WHETHER to set limits for perchlorate contamination (a primary ingredient in Rocket Fuel) in drinking water.

Why is our country missing common sense and decency. Where is corporate responsibility? Companies may need to work with potential  toxins and chemicals for advancements in technology and industry, but doing this responsibly and ethically shouldn’t have to be regulated – it should be common sense.

As a country we shouldn’t have to create an itemized list of things that we don’t want our babies to consume to ensure that companies aren’t piping it out the back door. Years ago it’s possible to argue ignorance could be claimed.  That is no longer the case… we now know how damaging  many of these toxins are to humans and beyond.  Executives who run these companies have spouses, children and grandchildren. They should know better and be ashamed.

We shouldn’t have to debate whether to impose limitations on a primary rocket fuel ingredient in our drinking water. It should be a given that our drinking water is free of toxins like perchlorate and others. I’m sure many people think it is…

FYI – bottle water is not the answer because the system for monitoring the bottled water industry is much less regulated than municipal water sources.

    From the EWG:

The EPA has reported finding perchlorate, a potent thyroid toxin, in public water systems in 28 states and territories. Researchers have also detected perchlorate in infant formula, breast milk and produce. Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) own tests have identified significant perchlorate contamination in nearly a fifth of lettuce samples grown in Southern California and Arizona. http://www.ewg.org/reports/suspectsalads But the defense and aerospace communities have lobbied against legal limits on perchlorate contamination in drinking water, fearing that regulation would require them to mount clean-ups at Cold-War era rocket and missile testing sites and storage facilities where tons of the chemical were spilled.

    Organic Denim

Denim is a staple in everyone’s wardrobe – I’m noticing that more and more designers are offering Organic Denim in their line up. Why choose organic denim, after all it’s not like you are going to eat it. Denim is only going on your body not in it.

Cotton is responsible for an estimated 12% of global pesticide use and 25% of insecticide use. With that many chemicals being used in it’s growth it can’t be having a positive effect on the environment, not to mention the water supply.

Brands that are offering Organic Choices include:

    Paige Premium Denim
Joe’s Jeans – in muse, olivia & provocateur.
    Levi’s

Glacier Organic Denim - From Paige Premium Denim

Glacier Organic Denim - From Paige Premium Denim

With so many great brands offering up organic selections. Next time you’re shopping for denim consider organic.

If you don’t find what you’re looking for in Organic, be sure to ask.  It’s important for retailers to know that their customers care about organic offerings!

Diva Guide: Plastics & Your Baby

September 18, 2009 by Tania Reuben
Filed under Diva Guide, Infant & Childcare, Parenting

If you live in North America and have an infant, chances are you are using plastics. If you are using plastics there is good reason to be informed and careful in their use.

Whenever you can opt for stainless steel or glass alternatives.  That said, I use plastic and you likely will/do to.  Let’s be as informed as we can in their usage.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION WHEN USING PLASTICS

    1. Never microwave any plastic.
    2. Never cover any food to be microwaved with plastic wrap.
    3. Avoid storing babies food in plastic.
    4. Wash plastics on the top shelf of your dishwasher or by hand.
    5. Avoid using old and scratched plastic bottles.

    BOTTLE FEEDING

    1. Choose Glass or Stainless Steel Baby Bottles – this is your best protection against future headlines!  My concern is that we’ll discover down the road that other petroleum made plastics also leach.
    2. If you are choosing Plastic Baby Bottles, most manufacturers now make BPA-free baby plastic bottles, with all BPA headlines in the news.  If you are using plastic – double check to ensure bottles you use are BPA free.
    3. Choose bottle nipples made from silicon. They are the most durable and inert options. Latex rubber nipples can cause allergic reactions and can contain impurities linked to cancer. The same goes for pacifiers. Throw away any nipple or pacifier that is discolored, thinning, tacky or ripped.
    4. Liners:  Only use if you them if you have a colicky baby and they’ve been advised by your doctor. The soft plastic liners may leach chemicals into formula, especially when heated. They are also a poor choice from an environmental perspective.

    STORING BREASTMILK

    FIRST FEEDING

    • When your infant starts on their first foods, instead of plastic dishes use glass custard cups. They are durable, can be microwaved, and some even have lids.  Chances are – at this stage – you’re the one doing the feeding.  Why risk exposure at this very early stage?
    • Before you know it your baby is going to start eating real food. Chances are you will be serving most of that food on plastic dishes. my children are  3 & 4  years old, so I know why! Plastic is less likely to break when it’s tossed to the floor.
    • Don’t store left over foods in the plastic dishes – store the leftovers in the custard cups we were just discussing – in my books.  Less time in the plastic = less time for chemical leaching.
    • Look for stainless steel or tempered glass bowls to use as  snack containers – they are your safest option.  We originally purchased plastic bowls for dry snacks and chopped fruit – my understanding is that leaching occurs most with heat and liquids, but if we could do it again, I’d choose a safer material.  BTW – plastic bowls break too!
    • If you are using plastic dishes – move your children to regular dishes at an earlier age.  My 2 year old son eats his dinner on the same plates as the rest of the family and at the dinner table drinks from a glass.  We’ve only lost one plate.
    • Duralex glasses are extremely durable, they are tempered making them stronger than regular glass.  Shopping for glasses look for Duralex if you want to keep them for a while!

    POLYCARBONATE

    • Avoid polycarbonate for babies food and drinks.
    • Polycarbonate plastics, marked with a #7 code or PC; they are rigid, transparent and used for food storage containers and water bottles, among other things. Trace amounts of BPA can migrate from these containers, particularly if used for hot food or liquids.

    IF IT MUST BE PLASTIC

    • Plastics with the recycling labels #1, #2 and #4 on the bottom are better choices because they do not contain BPA.
    • Soft or cloudy-colored plastic does not contain BPA.

    Tree Smart

Tree Smart is a company based in Oregon that makes something useful out of old newspapers. They turn it into a myriad of products, most notably pencils! They make both regular pencils & mini-colored pencils. As well as rulers and pens.

Evey 2 foot stack of newspapers they use manufacturing their products saves one pine tree.

Tree Smart recently sent me a few to try out. They were great. They write nicely, sharpen and have erasers on top, just like any other pencil .

The mini colored pencils the colors were comparable to others I’ve used and are about the size of a regular crayon.

The Tree Smart Pen looks and feels like a cardboard tube and fared better when handled with wet hands than I thought they would – the water dried and it looked as good as new in minutes. A small piece of smooth bamboo makes the pocket clip which is a little larger than it’s plastic counterparts, but didn’t get in the way when writing.

There products also make great promotional items ~ through September 30, 2009 they are offering free set up for custom art with a minimum 1000 piece order.

All in all – I can’t think of why I’d ever need a pencil made from a tree again!

    Super Why

SuperWhyEarlier this year I was invited to sit in on a round table with PBS and the Creator of Super Why, Angela Sontomero.

In general I’m pretty strict in the quantity and quality of the shows I allow the kidlette’s to watch. We typically limit TV time to Saturday mornings and perhaps one or two other times a week they will talk Dad into turning on a show. We use a DVR, which is great for bypassing all the promos!

Super Why is an excellent programming choice for parents who want to instill reading in their children. The makers of the show actually create the curriculum they want to covered in an episode and build the show around the curriculum. More typically, a lesson is squeezed into the storyline somewhere.

Both my 2 year and 4 year old love the show and it has given us an additional forum to discuss reading skills. My daughter is constantly telling me what letters various words start with. That’s what I love about this show, it instills the desire in your children ~ they want to learn more and will start asking you questions about words and letters. Super Why music is also the top music request in the car! Check out the Super Why Three Little Pigs ONLINE now.

Check out some of the Super Why interactive games online.

The show’s creators and Super Why also created a reading camp curriculum that has been used around country. The one week camp has had a measurable improvement in attendees reading skills. PBS & Super Why are sharing the curriculum materials at no cost, so you can create your own camp…. on your own or with a few other families. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE.

How Much Radiation Does Your Phone Emit? iphone fairs poorly

September 13, 2009 by Tania Reuben
Filed under Health & Wellness, In the News, Worth Sharing

The EWG recently announced a useful tool for consumers to find out how much radiation their cell phones are emitting.

Globally 4 billion people are cell phones users. Recent research is indicating a higher risk for brain and salivary gland tumors among people using cell phones for 10 years or longer. Studies also indicate a higher risk for mouth tumors and behavioral problems in children.

To date the evidence is not conclusive. However, taking steps to reduce your exposure seems prudent.

The EWG suggests the following to limit exposures:

    1. CHOOSE A LOW RADIATION PHONE

Use the EWG tool in this article to research the phones you are considering and choose the phone with the lowest emissions that still meets your needs.

    The Best 0.15 – 0.35 W/kg
Samsung Impression (SGH-a877) emits less radiation than any others tested.

    The Worst 1.55 W/kg
T-Mobile myTouch 3G, Motorola MOTO VU204, Kyocera Jax S1300 emit the most Radiation.

    Apple iPhone 0.97 W/kg
    Apple iPhone 3G S 0.52 – 1.19 W/kg
    Apple iPhone 3G 0.24 – 1.39 W/kg

A Good Example of What Not To Do!

A Good Example of What Not To Do!

    2. USE A HEADSET OR SPEAKER

Headsets emit less radiation than phones. Wired or wireless is debatable as experts are split on which is safer.

When your headset is not in use – take it OFF if you aren’t talking – some wireless headsets emit continuous, low-level radiation. You’ll look better without it too!

Using the speaker- phone feature is a good idea, because it reduces radiation exposure to the head/brain.

    3. LISTEN MORE, TALK LESS

Life lesson that turns out to be good for your brain! Cell phones emits radiation when you talk or text, but not while messages are incoming. Listening more and talking less reduces your exposure.

    4. KEEP PHONE AWAY FROM YOUR BODY

Keep your phone away from body while talking (with headset or speaker). If it’s clipped to your belt or in a pocket your soft body tissues will absorb the radiation.

    5. CHOOSE TEXTING OVER TALKING

Teens everywhere rejoice. Mothers blame the EWG, not me! Phones use less power to send text than voice. Less Power = Less Radiation. Additionally, when you speak your phone is typically at your ear, texting keeps radiation away from your head.  Please, don’t text while you are driving!

    6. IF THE SIGNAL IS POOR STAY OFF THE PHONE!

First – it’s annoying! Can you hear me now…
Secondly – Fewer signal bars on your phone means that it emits more radiation to get the signal to the tower. Use your phone when it has a strong signal.

    7. LIMIT CHILDREN’S PHONE USE

Children’s brains absorb twice the cell phone radiation as an adult’s. EWG joins health agencies in at least 6 countries in recommending limits for children’s phone use, such as for emergency situations only.

    8. SKIP THE “RADIATION SHIELD”

Radiation shields such as antenna caps or keypad covers reduce the connection quality and force the phone to transmit at a higher power with higher radiation.

    OTHER DEVICES THAT EMIT RADIATION

Cordless Phones – while in use they emit similarly to a cell phone, but some bases emit continuously.
Baby Monitors – use radiofrequency radiation, like cell phones. The EWG suggests parents contact manufacturers find out the radiation emissions (called SAR values) for these devices.

Why Are American Children So Sick?

This is a good piece that illustrates why we need to take action and get concerned about the food we are feeding our families and the food our children are being fed away from us.

By Robyn O’Brien – The Daily Green
Since when did it get so hard to be a mom? Ten years ago, we didn’t worry about sending a peanut butter and jelly sandwich into school with our children; we didn’t medicate our eight-year olds to get them through the school day; and the movie Rain Man was all we knew of autism.

Today it is estimated that 50% of Hispanic and African-American children will develop diabetes, that 1 in 90 boys has autism, and that 1 in 4 children has asthma. Pediatrics just reported that from 2002-2005, there was a 103% increase in diabetes medication for children, a 47% increase in asthma medication, a 41% increase in ADHD medication and a 15% increase in high cholesterol medicine.

How did our children get so sick?
