If we didn’t have enough reason to avoid HFCS – here is another one.
Mercury has found in almost half of all products containing High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Based on findings from the IATP Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy – products used in study pulled from the shelves in late 2008.
In 2009 Americans consumed an average of 35.7 pounds of the sweetener. That’s almost 3 lbs a month!!!
From the Washington Post:
MONDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) — Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies.

First they found Melamine and now Thyroid Toxin.
The only way we can know what we are feeding our infants seems to be if we nurse. And for so many new moms, this is their goal. There are so many proven benefits for nursing. Having suffered mastitis with my first child – I can attest to how challenging it can be to nurse and I know it’s not always an attainable goal.
WIth all these baby formula contaminations… I’m grateful that I’m through this stage.
If you are relying on formula to feed your infant or toddler – read on.
“Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found that 15 brands of powdered infant formula are contaminated with perchlorate, a rocket fuel component detected in drinking water in 28 states and territories.
The two most contaminated brands, made from cow’s milk, accounted for 87 percent of the U.S. powdered formula market in 2000, the scientists said.
The CDC scientists did not identify the formula brands they tested.”

Having a hard time choosing when to buy organic and when to save… this is the application for you! Take it with you and if you don’t have an iphone they’ll send you a pdf.
I have to admit – I’m jealous – they beat me to it… I wanted to develop this app a few months ago! But I guess they have saved me a lot of headaches – I can barely figure out this blogging thing – let alone a iphone application.

TweetPaperless Paper Towels

Instead of using paper towels for everyday spills and wipes – consider purchasing multi purpose clothes that you can keep on your counter to use instead.
A key for me was buying one type of cloth (I can’t keep whites white) so I opted for a easier color. They are kept on my counter folded in half in the lid of a rectangular basket, so they look neat and tidy.
Mine happened to come from Walmart – I paid under $3 for 12 of these moss green clothes. I use them to cover food in the microwave, clean up spills, wipe the kids, wipe the counters, basically any where I’d use a paper towel. Once they’ve been used – I have a bin under my sink they get put there while they wait a few days to be laundered.
I purchased 3 packs of the clothes and I have to wash them about once every 5 days.
Pictured is how they look in my home and where they are stored under my sink while they await laundering.
